Is this the sort of thing that only Leonidas would enjoy? Or could it be quite fun with the right gear?

"There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing."

"This is SPARTAAAA!"

I'm getting fixated on doing LEJOG as a literal Birthday Ride, which means late January.

It'd get lost in the snow!

Pulling away from January briefly, a summery LEJOG could pick up all sorts of people along the way. Embra massif, we mean you! ;)

A rolling multi-person peloton the length of the country with a cast of thousands? Sounds like a winner! :badger:

If you want to make it an epic try my JOGHome route, across the top, down the west coast, Bealach Na Ba both ways in a howling rain squall (no brakes on a loaded tourer down a 5 mile 1 in 5 with hairpins [-o< ) Skye, Arran, Galloway, South Tyne valley & down the Tees then Yorks Dales and into the top of the Peak. That's 830 miles & you're only 1/2 way home.

The midgies will still be hibernating, which is a bonus, although the weather in Scotland at that time of year is... Hilarious. Especially up north. You'd be lucky to get to John O'Groats, quite frankly. Or, if you did get there, bikes being good at thigns like that, you'd struggle getting home again because public transport struggles during winter. Remember those photos I took at Christmas last year? That was Aviemore. You're talking about going much further north than that.

I'd strongly recommend leaving it until April/May.

Sam

Just to add what RB said, I live 'oop north' and the weather here is horrendous in January. It will snow all the time, many roads will be impassible such as the Aberdeen to Braemar road beyond Banchory, the A9 north of Perth will be shut for long sections and the roads from Aberdeen to Inverness will be shut, again for large sections just to name a few examples.

Leave it to March/April. The midgies will still be asleep then and the weather will be so much better.
