Hello

Just a quick introduction...

I live near Inverness, and I’m thinking about coming down to the Badlands to make an attempt at the Dumb Run. I’ve never participated in any cycling epics (apart from the odd audax) but I quite fancy a bash at said ride. Until last year I’d been riding fixies, but have recently been dabbling with recumbents. Not a happy tale so far! I seem to be dealing with a couple of ‘likeable rogues’ (or cowboys). I’ve just about got one recumbent into semi-roadworthy condition, but I’m having problems with snapping spokes, and my wheelbuilder told me today that he hasn’t got any answers. If I do the Dumb Run I’m going to have to dust-off the fixie, polish the Brooks, buy and fit a couple of new tubs, and learn how to ride it again. Still, I’ve got two weeks…

Sounds like you've done about as much preparation as the rest of us.

Apart from our Chairman, who has managed to sneak in a couple of sneaky centuries, the git.

I don’t know if I ought to tell you this, but I may be a bad omen. You see, on each of the handful of long rides I’ve done, I’ve been caught out in weather which made the experience somewhat akin to cycling through a Premium Programme Carwash, without the benefit of the hot air dryer or final wax stages.

Still, I’ve just bought my first waterproof cycling jacket. I got a good chance to try it out this morning, and apart from the sleeves being slightly too short, it seemed to do the trick, which is more than can be said of the ‘waterproof’ socks which also had their first (and final) outing.

Today was my first ride on a ‘proper’ bike since last August. I don’t feel too bad in the leg department, although the ride was only a fraction of the distance of the Dumb Run, and I wasn't exactly fast. As I say, I need to get my 'summer' bike on the road, and also look into transport options.

Oh aye, they know about that experience from previous Dumb Run epics! Fingers crossed the 'bad omen' this time is that the weather is better! :mrgreen:
